The Frankfurt LAB awards artistic research scholarships to former students of the Hessian Theater Academy (HTA) as part of the HTA postgraduate funding program "Artistic Research" for the year 2024. The funding project is made possible by the Hessian Ministry of Science and Art. Graduates of the HTA degree programs who have completed their degree within the last 10 years are eligible to apply. The scholarships, amounting to €5,000 for two consecutive months, are intended for further artistic training and qualification. Projects with an institution-critical character or those that are not supported by conventional funding structures are particularly welcome.

On the perspective of the lecture as a performance from a queer, disabled, deaf, chronically ill perspective.
What are issues that queer, disabled people are currently concerned about? What is knowledge of and about disability, how is it generated, archived, and shared? How do disabled or chronically ill artists* currently participate in knowledge production related to disability? What barriers do you face in academia, what barriers do you face in theater and performance? What is a lecture performance? Can the latter be "crippled"? What does the method of "cripping" actually mean? (How) does it open up not only institutions, but also forms and formats? And (how) can it performatively make higher education accessible to all?
The six-part online lecture series, under the artistic direction of Steven Solbrig, addresses these and other questions. Non-disabled, disabled, deaf, and chronically ill performers* and scholars* are invited to appropriate the "classic lecture time" (90 minutes) in crip time & space and performatively frame their online talk(s) and lecture(s).

November 10, 2023, from 3 p.m.
The Stadttheater Gießen invites students of the Hessian Theatre Academy to a network meeting in November, with whom it will continue its previous cooperation. Since the 2022/23 season, the theater has been set up with new artistic teams in all divisions - drama, dance, young theater, musical theater - and would like to enter into a conversation with the next generation of theater professionals about working structures and visions for future work at and with the municipal theater.
For four weeks they used the spaces of the Frankfurt LAB to try out new methods, scenes and ideas. On 14.10.2023 an interested audience could take a look at what emerged: six residents from South Africa (Wezile Harmans), Morocco (Mehdi Dahkan), Vietnam (Trần Minh Hải), Palestine (Hana Abdelnabi & Hend Abu Hassanein) and Argentina/Colombia (Omayra Martínez Garzón) used the "Frankfurt Moves!" Initiative of the KfW Stiftung at Frankfurt LAB 2024 to network and further develop their artistic work.
The Directing program at the HfMDK Frankfurt is looking for two personalities who are well connected in the theater scene to take responsibility as a team for Frankfurt's directing education. Link to the advertisement:

With great sadness we have heard about the death of our former colleague Hans Hollmann. As professor of directing at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt am Main, Hans Hollmann initiated the founding of the Hessian Theater Academy in 2002, which he subsequently presided over as president for six years. Hans Hollmann led the Academy until his retirement with inspiring commitment and great creative enthusiasm, enabling decisive steps to be taken to improve cooperation between theaters and performing arts programs in Hesse and beyond. His immense experience as a director and doctor of law gave his voice a very special weight in our study and production network. We will miss Hans Hollmann - as an artist, as a dedicated university teacher, as an innovator of teaching in the field of performing arts.
Lecture Series SoSe 22: Power ?! Theatre
In German, the word Macht can mean two things: On the one hand it means power in the sense of a position, on the other hand it is at the same time a verb in the imperative, as a call to do something, to make something. The festival motto of "Politik im Freien Theater" is "Macht" and, in the above mentioned German double meaning of the term , focuses on "protagonists and activities that address acute social crises and global challenges in a critical, demanding and also combative manner", according to the announcement text.
The HTA lecture series Macht ?! Theater is based on the assumption that power as an unclear concept must be discussed anew in relation to phenomena and structures, and that possibilities and strategies for action are only articulated in relation to each other by different protagonists and activities. Following the double meaning of the term Macht, four protagonists from institutional, political and artistic theatre work will meet on each of three Thursday evenings to discuss questions of power in relation to their own practices and working relationships and to ask what makes it. The series is dedicated to three thematic complexes: power-critical educational work, power-critical intervention and power-critical curation. On each evening, a reference to local/regional structures will be created.

For the first time in 2021, the Hessian Ministry of Science and the Arts has awarded the "Ottilie Roderstein Scholarships" for female artists and women working in the arts who live or work in Hessen. One of two main scholarships (endowed with up to 70.000,- €) and one of three junior scholarships (endowed with up to 40.000,- €) have been awarded to female students of the Hessian Theater Academy. Minister Angela Dorn presented the prizes to Joana Tischkau, a choreographer from the master's program in choreography and performance at the Justus-Liebig-University in Gießen, and Marie Schwesinger, a graduate of the directing program at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts and a master's student in dramaturgy at the Goethe University in Frankfurt, at a ceremony held at the Hessian Ministry of Science and the Arts on Dec. 17.
In the radical self-care, anti-discrimination and anti-racist body-based practices of conflict management and healing, settling the body is one of the primary aspects to begin the process of coming back to the body. In performative and dance practices as well settling the body is a crucial moment in working with the body.
The lecture series inquires into different aspects and dimensions of settling in (in the world, in the community, in relations, in environments) as well as different modalities of unsettling the bodies (by lack of protection, because of racism and sexism). It examines the consequences of denying the possibility to move through coercive detention or internation, in order to outline the functioning of current politics of insecurity by its operating on an intimate and visceral level.

The performance "1001 Sorrys" by HTA graduates Hanna Steinmair, Max Brands and Bastian Sistig (alumni of the Applied Theater Studies program in Giessen and Directing in Frankfurt) wins the jury prize at this year's Hessische Theatertage in Marburg in the category "Play. Reality. Magic." The play is a co-production of the Theaterakademie with the Künstlerhaus Mousonturm in Frankfurt as well as the Starke Stücke Festival and was created within the framework of the "Next Generation Workspace", in which artists:inside developed projects for a contemporary children's and youth theater. The jury describes "1001 Sorries" as a "rare, beautiful experience in theater, which succeeds in enchanting young and old with few and simple theatrical means, such as three microphones, a few balloons, click-counters, a chair and simple costumes in a big way". The HTA congratulates the award winners!
The HTA also congratulates its many other graduates who received awards at this year's Theatre Days. The performance films "Wearing Heavy Boots" by Hella Lux (directed by Milena Wichert, graduate director, among others) and "Rage. A Tennis Western" (also by Hanna Steinmair) were awarded in the category "Space. Time. Fiction." Alumni and students Martin Bien, Herbert Graf, Friedrich Hartung, Anne Mahlow, Nora Schneider, Max Smirzitz, Felix Schwarzrock and Nikolas Stäudte received non-endowed prizes in the category "Aushalten. Persevere. Standhalten." for outstanding achievements in connection with the Corona pandemic.
Various changes and structural debates are currently shaping the discourse on theater. It is therefore only logical to also examine the task of directing with regard to production processes and aesthetics. In the coming summer semester, we will invite ten directors to present their artistic positions and enter into a conversation with us about their own work. At the same time, different aspects of this profession emerge among the diverse artists: How can one direct collectively? How is it possible to work consistently on one's own aesthetic, sometimes over decades and in different institutional contexts and teams? What does it look like to walk through the municipal theater? How does one succeed in entering the profession? How can directing be implemented without reproducing hierarchical structures? How can one practice directing and manage a house at the same time? HTA students can discuss these and many other questions with our guests: Artistic directors of the HTA, an alumna of the HfMDK, successful female directors, young directors, a director from children's and youth theater, international directors and many more.
The names of the guests will be announced at the beginning of the summer semester.
In a performance analysis seminar with Friederike Thielmann (Fridays 10-13h) the respective sessions will be prepared in discussions based on video readings.
Both events take place exclusively digitally and usually in German.
Thursdays 6:30-8pm - online event. Date of the accompanying performance analysis seminar (participation also possible independently of the lecture): Fridays 10-13h.
Registration for both events to: akguen_at_hessische-theaterakdemie.de

Against the background of the current crisis of Western-style democracy, to which the return to authoritarian forms of rule and structures is a response in many places, the lecture series "Frankfurter Positionen 2021" invites artists and scientists from the fields of theatre, performance and the sciences concerned with them to reflect on the relationship between theatre and democracy. On the one hand, they will reflect on the current problems and crises of the classical notions of democracy: the problems of migration, global warming and economic monopolisation, the devaluation of old actors and institutions, such as the nation and its parliament, associated with globalisation, and the recognition of the co-responsibility of the West and its economic order.
On the other hand, the lecture series, which takes up the topic of Auslaufmodell [: -----------------] of the "Frankfurter Positionen 2021", will ask questions: Which person or subject will be able to answer the challenges described in this way? How do new forms of theatre, choreography, forms of representation that transcend genres and varieties react to the current crisis of democracy? How does the crisis enter into its forms, modes of organisation and content?
The event series is a cooperation between the Institute for Theatre, Film and Media Studies, Künstlerhaus Mousonturm and the festival "Frankfurter Positionen 2021". It is supported by funds from BHF BANK Foundation, the Adolf and Luisa Haeuser Foundation for Arts and Culture, the Hessian Theatre Academy and the DAAD.

Since September, the Theatre and Film School in Budapest has been run by a board of trustees appointed by the Hungarian government around Viktor Orbán. This is intended to expand government influence on the cultural scene; the old management of the university was removed from power. In this way, the Hungarian government deprived the prestigious Budapest University of Theatre and Film Arts of its independence. Almost all teaching staff have resigned, while students protest. About 250 of them have now occupied the university. With their action, they are demanding a guarantee of autonomy in teaching and research; a loss of self-determination would be unacceptable from the student side.
Just as the freedom of artistic expression requires that artists are free from state censorship, political interference or pressure from non-government organizations, contemporary academic practice requires political independence and institutional autonomy for universities and art schools. This latest example of the disregard for freedom of expression in Hungary shows how urgently the EU institutions need to counteract autocratic tendencies to influence academic teaching and research.
The Hessian Theatre Academy is now releasing funds for corona-related rehearsals from the annual budget, which can be used to finance additional rehearsal rooms. Funding can now be applied for student HTA projects, that were and are directly affected by corona-related restrictions and thus face planing troubles. The HTA office and the Frankfurt LAB organization team also offer their support searching for alternative rehearsal spaces. In this context, HTA partner theatres and other institutions have responded that additional rooms will be made available.
With these procedures, we want to contribute dispositionally and financially so that the (in many cases exam and graduation-relevant) student projects can continue to take place under the necessary qualitative conditions within the scope of the planned curriculum, without project participants suffering from any fundamental disadvantages.
Interested parties can contact the HTA office via email (info_at_hessische-theaterakademie.de) or by phone (+49 (0)69-154007114).
Since 30 April, students of Applied Theatre Studies have been providing a diverse online platform. In different, partly changing formats between late-night talk show and theory podcast, insights and outlooks into and from the institute are given. More information and access to the online proposals can be found on the website.
We regularly update our calendar of events (see below). Due to the current situation, however, we recommend that you to always check the websites of the organisers and theatres for information about the announced events and possible cancellations.
In 2020, an initiative of the Hessisches Ministerium für Wissenschaft und Kunst (Hessian Ministry of Science and Art) again gave Frankfurt LAB the possibility to grant postgraduate fundings. Again Frankfurt LAB had the chance to award four research grants to former students of the Hessian Theatre Academy. Grants of up to 6,000 EUR were awarded to financially frame and support the development of artistic projects that can be defined under the term of as artistic research. A detailed press release is available here.

Kollaborationen, Kooperationen, Kollektive –

The HTA is a signatory to the Frankfurt Declaration of the Many. In doing so, we, like many other Frankfurt cultural institutions, express our solidarity with people who are marginalized and work for a polyphonic, inclusive and democratic exchange at all levels.
